SERIOUS PLAY
In play activity is uncoupled from immediate action in the world. The serious aspect of this is that it enables us to explore many alternative pathways to find something that makes a better fit with our needs when we return to our tasks.
Play is not just abandoning controls, because it has its own rules. In creative play the rules change and develop by agreement with others. They are not fixed and imposed.
The 'space of play' is a third space between dreaming and functional life. It enables people to meet and interact in the realm of imagination as well as fact.
Learning how to improvise comes with serious play. Improvisation is generating many variations on a theme. Improvising with others develops co-ordination.

Serious play is an analogue of biological evolution. It is governed by a combination of randomness, selection and co-ordination.
The three elements are incorporated in the structure of process of LVT.
SERIOUS PLAY |
Explanation |
3 LEVELS IN LVT |
Explanation |
Randomness |
Randomness always means 'relative to a given order'. Randomness is also spontaneity which creates new meaning . |
GATHER |
The MMs gathered are generated by selection but exhibit randomness relative to a higher order |
Selection |
Selection comes from context and follows rules. |
ORGANISE |
The MMs are grouped together to form and identify emergent properties |
Co-ordination |
Co-ordination is between the players. The play of co-ordination can change and develop the rules of selection. |
INTEGRATE |
The different modes of selection represented by the participants are resolved into a pattern or ecology |
